eVTOL News July 2026: Joby's Toyota JV and Virgin Atlantic Deal, Vertical Slips to 2029, and the World Cup Verdict

And EHang kept doing the thing everyone else is still promising — carrying paying passengers, now in three Chinese cities. Joby × Toyota: the manufacturing JV

At the end of June, Joby and Toyota — its largest outside investor — formalized a manufacturing joint venture to industrialize eVTOL production. Toyota has been embedded in Joby's production system for years (its production engineers helped design the Marina, California pilot line), but a JV is a different commitment level: shared capital, shared tooling, and Toyota's production system applied to aircraft at volume.

Why it matters: the FAA type certificate Joby received in June 2026 answers "is the aircraft safe?" — it doesn't answer "can you build hundreds of them?" That's the production certificate fight, and a Toyota JV is the strongest possible signal that Joby intends to win it on automotive terms. The first US revenue passenger seat is still realistically late 2026 / early 2027, with Dubai targeted inside the 2026 window.

Joby × Virgin Atlantic: the UK goes exclusive

On July 22, Joby and Virgin Atlantic announced an exclusive partnership to bring Joby's air taxi service to the United Kingdom, with initial networks planned around London and Manchester. The model mirrors Joby's Delta partnership in the US: airline books the premium passenger, Joby flies the short-haul airport connection.

For UK travelers the near-term shape is clear — think Heathrow or Gatwick to central London in single-digit minutes, sold through an airline you already fly. Timing depends on UK CAA validation of Joby's FAA type certificate; no service date has been committed. Vertical Aerospace: VX4 slips to 2029

On July 13, Vertical Aerospace confirmed its VX4 certification target has moved from 2028 to 2029. The slip landed in the same month as genuinely good flight-test news: the VX4 completed its first piloted wingborne-to-hover transition in April, the UK CAA expanded its Permit to Fly for piloted transition testing in July, and the aircraft flew public demonstrations at the Farnborough Airshow.

That's the honest texture of certification: visible progress and slipping dates aren't contradictory. We've updated the certification tracker to reflect the 2029 target. VX4 still holds EASA/UK CAA parallel certification, Rolls-Royce motors, American Airlines backing, and 1,400+ pre-orders.

FAA eIPP: BETA flies the first organ-transport relay

The FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) — 8 projects across 26 states — logged its most consequential flight yet: a BETA Technologies ALIA flew the program's first organ-transport relay mission, moving a transplant organ from Virginia to Maryland. Medical logistics is the use case where eVTOL economics work today — high-value, time-critical cargo, no passenger certification stack required — and it's how BETA has quietly become the most operationally advanced US eVTOL company.

For passengers, eIPP matters because the cohort cities (NYC, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Tampa, Orlando among them) are where US passenger service lands first — late 2026 into 2027.

EHang: still the only ticket you can actually buy

While the West stacks certificates, EHang's autonomous EH216-S keeps flying paying passengers in three Chinese cities: Guangzhou (¥299 scenic loop), Hefei, and Shenzhen — which now operates from the world's first automated vertical-lift vertiport in Luohu, with a ¥800 cross-border route to Hong Kong. World Cup 2026: the verdict is in — zero eVTOL flights

The tournament ended July 19. Final score on air taxis: 0 of 16 host cities had commercial passenger eVTOL service at any point in the window — exactly what our host-city status tracker projected back in April, when headlines were still promising flying taxis for the final. Helicopter charter carried the premium air traffic, at $220–$780 per seat depending on corridor. The infrastructure story now rolls forward to the LA 2028 Olympics, where Archer holds the official air mobility partnership and a 2027 LAX → Inglewood soft launch remains plausible.
