DW News on eVTOLs: What They Got Right (and the Two Corrections Worth Making)

DW News published a 2026 eVTOL explainer covering four companies and a timeline estimate. We agree with the bulk of it. Two factual points are worth correcting for travelers planning a trip in the next 24 months.

The DW News claims, point by point

1. AutoFlight's "Matrix" — 5 tons, 10 passengers, 20 m wingspan, 1 hour endurance. This is a real aircraft and the specs match AutoFlight's published Matrix prototype. The aircraft is one of the largest eVTOLs by passenger count globally. Caveat DW didn't mention: AutoFlight already has a certified eVTOL on the market — the CarryAll (V2000CG) cargo variant, which received its full CAAC type, production, and airworthiness certificates between 2024 and 2025 and flew a 150 km open-water mission to an offshore oil platform in August 2025. The Matrix is a separate, larger, passenger airframe with no published Chinese type-certification application yet. Treat it as a future product, not a 2026 transport option.

2. Joby — "final stages of FAA certification, first passengers in Dubai 2026." Accurate. Joby received its FAA type certificate in June 2026 — the first US eVTOL to do so — and Dubai's RTA partnership has been targeting first commercial passenger flights inside the 2026 window. The nuance DW glosses over: a type certificate is the start of the commercial stack, not the end. Operators still need a production certificate, an air operator certificate, and per-airframe standard airworthiness certificates before a passenger can buy a ticket. The Dubai launch is feasible because UAE's GCAA has been running a parallel validation effort with the FAA; the US domestic launch is still a quarter or two behind.

3. Archer — "Midnight cert by 2028, official air taxi provider for the LA Olympics." Accurate. Archer's FAA progress hit a milestone in March 2026 when the FAA accepted 100% of its Means of Compliance — an industry first. The LA 2028 Olympics official air mobility partnership is public. We'd note a 2027 soft launch on the LAX → Inglewood corridor is on the cards before the Games.

4. Vertical Aerospace VX4 — "eyeing certification in 2028." Accurate. VX4 is in joint EASA / UK CAA certification testing with Rolls-Royce electric motors, American Airlines as an investor, and 1,400+ pre-orders on the books. 2028 is the published target.

5. Timing — "3 years for something more viable, 5–10 years for full-scale rollout." Broadly correct, and it's the most honest part of the segment. The certification stack, vertiport infrastructure, pilot training pipeline, insurance frameworks, and ATC integration are all multi-year builds. The first revenue passenger seats in the US are likely Q4 2026 / Q1 2027; the first metro with a real network of routes (multiple operators, multiple vertiports, daily schedule) is probably 2028–2030. Full saturation — hundreds of routes, thousands of seats per day — is the 5–10 year horizon.

The one thing DW missed: commercial passenger eVTOL is happening today

The segment closes with "there's still a long way to go before we see sky taxis swirling above our heads." That framing isn't quite right.

Commercial passenger eVTOL exists today — it's just not in the West.

EHang's autonomous EH216-S has been carrying paying passengers in two Chinese cities since 2025:

• **Guangzhou** — a ¥299 (~$41) scenic loop from the Heyi Aviation vertiport, bookable via WeChat mini-program.
• **Shenzhen** — a ¥800 (~$113) cross-border seat to Hong Kong.

• Joby's first US revenue passenger seat — currently targeted Q4 2026, likely Manhattan or Dubai first.
• Archer's first US commercial route — LAX → Inglewood publicly committed, soft launch on the 2027 cards.
• AutoFlight Prosperity (V2000EM) — the 6-seat passenger variant of the CarryAll platform, currently in CAAC Phase IV compliance verification. This, not the Matrix, is AutoFlight's near-term passenger entry.
• EHang in Europe — EASA application pending; first European demonstration flights have already happened. A 2027 European commercial launch would change the conversation.

DW's 5-to-10-year framing is right for full-scale rollout. The first ticketed commercial flights are nearer than that — in two countries, they've already happened.
